Become a Substitute
Welcome to the Substitute Online Application Process
There are three pathways to becoming a substitute teacher:
- Local Substitute Permit– for applicants who have at least 48 credit hours of college coursework
- State Substitute Permit– for applicants who have completed a full educator preparation program that led to a teaching certificate but don’t have the experience to renew their regular certificate
- Paraprofessional Substitute Permit- for applicants hired as para professionals, only valid in specific school district requesting the permit
The steps to be considered for Substitute teaching with Kearney Public Schools are outlined below.
- Application – Complete the online Substitute Application on the Job Postings Website.
- Certification – A Nebraska Teaching Certificate, Substitute Teaching Certificate or Local Substitute Certificate.
- Background check – receive clearance through the background check process.
- Substitute Onboarding - Once the background checks have been completed and a certificate has been approved, a substitute onboarding will be scheduled with Human Resources.
